ESMA has issued a consultation proposing to extend MiCA's regulatory perimeter to cover DeFi gateway services, staking, and crypto lending, areas previously in a regulatory grey zone. Critically, the proposal includes a provision that would bar MiCA-licensed firms from providing any licensable service, including custody and transfers, involving noncompliant stablecoins, significantly tightening the compliance surface for EU-regulated entities.
For Armada's crypto repo desk, the stablecoin restriction is the most immediate concern. If EU-based hedge fund or family office counterparties operate under MiCA licenses or plan to obtain them, their ability to transact using certain stablecoins as margin or settlement currency could be curtailed. Any cross-border repo structures involving DeFi-adjacent custody or lending mechanics should be reviewed for MiCA exposure before the consultation closes.
