Citi Extends Fiat-to-Stablecoin Interoperability with Coinbase at Sibos

American Banker · Sep 29, 2026 9:25 AM EDT

At Sibos in Miami, Citi CEO Jane Fraser announced expanded interoperability between Citi's fiat payment infrastructure and Coinbase's stablecoin network, framing it as a tool for releasing trapped liquidity for institutional clients. The integration allows Citi corporate clients to move between bank deposits and on-chain stablecoins with reduced friction, building on earlier pilots in tokenized trade finance.

For Armada's crypto repo desk, this development is relevant at the margin settlement layer. If institutional counterparties begin using Citi-Coinbase rails to post or return collateral in stablecoin form, Armada's Fireblocks-based custody setup must be able to receive and verify those transfers. Additionally, faster settlement capability could reduce counterparty overnight exposure, which is a selling point Armada should evaluate for inclusion in client documentation.

Suggested action Evaluate whether Citi-Coinbase rails offer faster collateral settlement paths; confirm Fireblocks MSA covers interoperability with Citi's stablecoin layer.
