Canada's six largest banks โ collectively holding the majority of the country's banking assets โ have announced a joint initiative to develop an interbank tokenized deposit platform. The project aims to enable near-instantaneous settlement between institutions using tokenized representations of bank deposits on a shared infrastructure, a significant step beyond individual bank pilots seen in other jurisdictions.
For Armada's traditional repo desk, tokenized deposits issued by G-SIB equivalents could eventually emerge as settlement assets or collateral in cross-border repo transactions. While the initiative is Canadian and early-stage, it signals that major bank infrastructure is moving toward tokenized settlement rails, which Basel III and SLR frameworks have not yet fully addressed. Armada should track regulatory guidance from OSFI and the Bank of Canada as a leading indicator of where U.S. regulators may follow.
