FASB Proposes Treating Qualifying Stablecoins as Cash Equivalents on Balance Sheets

CoinDesk · Aug 18, 2026 5:25 PM EDT

The Financial Accounting Standards Board has floated a proposal that would allow certain stablecoins, likely those backed by high-quality liquid assets such as short-term Treasuries, to be classified as cash equivalents under U.S. GAAP. This would remove a significant accounting friction that has discouraged corporate treasurers and bank balance sheets from holding stablecoins operationally.

For Armada's crypto desk, this is directly relevant to tokenized T-Bill instruments like those already on the collateral schedule. If stablecoin-adjacent or T-Bill-backed tokens gain cash-equivalent treatment, counterparty appetite from asset managers and family offices could rise materially, expanding repo volume. Armada should also verify that any reclassification does not inadvertently alter haircut or margin treatment expectations among existing clients.

Suggested action Monitor FASB comment period; assess whether tokenized T-Bill collateral pricing changes under new accounting treatment.
