Citigroup has announced plans to launch bitcoin custody services for institutional clients before year-end 2026, joining BNY Mellon and a small number of bank custodians now offering direct digital asset safekeeping. Citi's entry is significant given its global custodian footprint and existing relationships with the hedge funds and asset managers that Armada targets.
For Armada's crypto repo desk, Citi custody creates a credible alternative to Fireblocks-based custody arrangements for clients who prefer regulated bank custody. Armada should confirm that its Fireblocks MSA and SOC 2 positioning articulate clear advantages, such as no rehypothecation guarantees and real-time collateral transparency, that a bank custodian model may not replicate. This is also a relationship risk if Citi pairs custody with financing.
