Babylon Labs proposes native BTC collateral on Aave V4 via Taproot UTXO vaults

Aave Governance Forum · May 25, 2026 10:44 AM EDT

Babylon Labs has submitted a Temperature Check to Aave governance proposing two new V4 Spokes that would accept native BTC as collateral via Trustless Bitcoin Vaults. Depositors lock BTC in Taproot UTXOs on Bitcoin mainnet; redemption is governed by on-chain rules and settles directly to a Bitcoin UTXO without wrapping, bridging, or a custodian. The proposal is backed by Stanford-affiliated founders and represents one of the most technically mature attempts to bring unencumbered BTC into DeFi lending.

For Armada's crypto repo desk, this matters because it sets a new market benchmark for BTC collateral that bypasses custodial intermediaries entirely. Armada's current model routes BTC custody through Fireblocks; if institutional counterparties begin pricing wrapped-BTC haircuts against a trustless native-BTC standard, LTV ratios and collateral quality assessments may need recalibration.

Suggested action Reassess BTC LTV assumptions vs Babylon TBV settlement model; flag custody implications to Fireblocks MSA review.
