Kraken launches CFTC-regulated crypto spot margin trading in U.S. using Bitnomial licenses

The Block · May 6, 2026 11:39 AM EDT

Kraken has launched regulated cryptocurrency spot margin trading in the United States, built on licenses acquired through its purchase of Bitnomial, a CFTC-registered derivatives exchange. The product is the first to emerge from the Bitnomial acquisition and gives Kraken a compliant framework for offering leveraged spot crypto trading to U.S. institutional and qualified clients, with perpetuals and options to follow.

For Armada's crypto-repo desk, this is a direct competitive development. Market makers, hedge funds, and institutional holders seeking BTC and ETH leverage now have a CFTC-regulated exchange venue as an alternative to OTC repo facilities. Armada's differentiation lies in its MRA/GMRA documentation, no-rehypothecation guarantee, and Fireblocks custody transparency, none of which Kraken's exchange model replicates. Pricing and margin rate comparison with Kraken's product should inform Armada's rate-setting for similar counterparty segments.

Suggested action Review Kraken margin product terms and margin rates; assess overlap with Armada crypto-repo counterparty segments including market makers and institutional holders.
